What's multiplet splitting?

When electrons occupy an orbital (in an atom or molecule), and they have the potential to occupy slightly different energy orbitals they are said to occupy a ';multiplet';. In the 3d shell of zinc, for example, they can be in either the 3d3/2 or 3d5/2 multiplet of the 3d.

The energy difference, or splitting, between the orbitals is the multiplet splitting.

This is a chemistry explanation. The same definition can be applied to any state of an elementary particle where two possible states vary slightly in energy. What's multiplet splitting?
hate split ends!What's multiplet splitting?
That is when you have 5 girls in bed with you and you have to decide which two must go!
