What sports will help you to do the splits?

I stopped doing sports in 04 and went to musical instruments. I am about to to Taw Kwon Doe, and my friend has told me that I will be able to do the splits. Although I dont belive her. Can you please give me ideas why she would say that..What sports will help you to do the splits?
I think Taw Kwon Doe requires you to be extra limber, so part of the training would include stretching the ligament of the legs so that you can move them more fluidly without risking injuryWhat sports will help you to do the splits?
Your friend is right aside from Gymnastics, Tae Kwon Do focuses on kicks and that means for you to achieve a higher kick than most people, you have to workout on the flexibility of your legs to achieve that. Tae Kwon Do would allow you to achieve splits based on the type of training that they do.
gymnastics and yoga will help tremendously
yoga
Gymnastics on a regular basis definately
Your friend probably told you this because the legs, limberness of the legs, and ability to extend the legs is essential to Tae Kwon Do. The art in general emphasizes kicks thrown from a mobile stance, using the leg's greater reach and power to disable the opponent from a distance. Splits help the extension and strength in your legs.

Stretching is a very important part of the martial arts. In my Karate classes (I practiced Shaolin Kempo for almost 9 years, and was a 1st degree black belt), we worked on splits often, and it was often a part of our stretching routine after warm-ups. Sometimes we'd have whole classes of muscle stretching exercises. Stretching is an essential part of martial arts, because it helps you prevent injuring your muscles from overextending them, and will help you extend your strikes and kick further, more accurately and with more control.

The essence of martial arts is to master your body, and tempering your body over time to be able to preform a split is one way of doing that. It will take a long time and lots of dedication, especially if it's not like something you are used to doing. However, with time and perseverance and lots of practice, you can get a split too.
