What makes my homegrown tomatoes split on top?

Some varieties are more prone to splitting than others. Splitting can also be caused by over watering during periods of rapid growth. Using mulch to conserve and control moisture will help.

Pick cracked fruit early to prevent any opportunistic diseases from infecting the plant.

Good Luck and Happy Gardening from Cathy and Neal! What makes my homegrown tomatoes split on top?
Sometimes it has to do with the variety of the tomato, and it usually affects the first fruit setting the most.

It could also likely be a sign of irregular watering. What makes my homegrown tomatoes split on top?
It is often caused by inconsistant watering. Letting the plant dry out and than giving it a bunch of water. They also can get sunburned around the top but water is the big thing.
When the plants are dry and they get a sudden burst of water this can happen. The skin can't grow as fast as the tomato swells and it cracks.

Try putting some mulch down and water on a regular basis.

This will ensure they don't dry out and split.
you have gotten some pretty good answers here,.....it does have to do with your watering practice,.....tomatoes like to have consistent water, if you allow them to dry up to much and then water them they will suck up the water and the skin will burst, just try to keep them moist all the time,.....mulch is a good thing to do for tomatoes it helps to hold in the water,.....also if you want to make your tomatoes more juicy add one table spoon of Epsom salts to one gallon of water tomatoes like the manganese in the Epsom salts,.....
