Can i split the signal coming out of a virgin media cable box?

so i can watch one programme on the telly and record a different programme on a hard drive recorder/ dvd recorder. virgin say no and i need a new box from them- at a cost of 拢99. (though my mate got the same box from them for 拢25 so i suppose my supplementary question is: if i cant split the signal then how do i get them to give me the box for 25 quid?)Can i split the signal coming out of a virgin media cable box?
There is a way of recording a Cable channel and watching terrestrial channels and a handfull of Cable channels....

Plug an aerial into the Antenna socket of the cable box.

Plug an RF cable from the TV RF OUT on the Cable box to the Antenna socket on the TV.

Tune in your TV by going into installation menu and search for new channels.
