How do I learn how to do a split?

I am not flexible at all! I really want to be on broadway when I grow up so I want to be prepared for any difficult dance moves like splits and high kicks. How long will it take me and what sort of stretches should I do to do a complete split and a really good high kick? Thank you very much. :)How do I learn how to do a split?
OK I am a dancer, and I just got my splits down. It took me about 2 years. I was 11 when I started, and now I am able to do it. (Right and left leg in front but not horizontally.) So what you want to do is start taking dance classes if you are not in them already. I would say take ballet, tap, jazz, and hip-hop. All of these dances are generally performed in broadway shows, so if you are awesome if you aren't then I would start in some. What you want to do is like moderate activity or exercise like jogging for ten minutes, doing some bicep curls, and crunches. Then you stretch. When your muscles are warm they are much easier to stretch, and more likely to stretch farther. So you want to stand up, spread legs out about shoulder length appart, and reach right and then left. Eventually you will be able to touch your nose or head to your knee. This is good because you are getting more flexible. Next you would want to do straddle position. Where you sit on the floor with your legs spread apart. You want to reach your feet and yes do it right and left again. You will be able to touch your nose to your knee as well. Also the one thing that helped me the most was doing straddle position against the wall. You sit on the floor scoot up to a wall so your butt is touching it. Then you lift your legs straight up and widen them to straddle position. While you are doing this listen to your favorite song because that's how long you want to hold it for. Every maybe 30 seconds or so try to lower them a bit more. This helped me so so so much! Once the song is over you want to lift them (SLOWLY) straight up, and then down in to your body. Once you have done all this stretching then start practicing your splits. Right leg in front, left leg in front, and then sideways. Try to stretch everyday and maybe twice a day if you have time but once a day will do! Good luck and keep practicing!

(P.S also with the kicks stretch and then practice those 2! Walk forward kicking. Legs straight, toes pointed, and make sure that the foot that stays on the ground does not rise up becausae so many people make the mistake of kicking and rising thier ankle! That will not help you! And try to take singing lessons if you aren't already to get prepared for broadway! good luck! How do I learn how to do a split?

that's basically all you have to do, and it teaches what to do further when you have your splits so you can stretch even more...

it might hurt at first but you need to get passed it...

if you don't give up before the time runs out and you practice

a little everyday you should get in at least a month

high kicks are actually much easier than the splits

and once you get your splits i GUARANTEE that you will be able to do an excellent high kick without working yourself up..

there easy to do once you can do your splits!

just make sure to keep your shoulders and torso

straight and NEVER EVER hunch while doing it.
PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!! That's really the only thing that will bring you to the level of being capable of doing the splits and high kicks. Stretching at least twice a day will really help you to improve. Check out some other Yahoo Answers on how to get your splits--there are many really good ones that even include specific stretches and diagrams that you can use to gain greater flexibility. Just remember when you are stretching to push yourself to the point that you feel the muscle stretching, not to the point of pain. Best of Luck and Happy New Year!!!
for the splits you need to stretch for 15 minutes, twice a day. do various stretches that stretch different muscles. and, you need to hold these stretches for a minute. that's really what helps get the splits down. if you can't at first, that's okay, but work up to a minute. you can find different stretches in books and online.

for those high kicks, stretching will help them, but you have to practice them. do various heights, about ten kicks at each level. you'll notice a definite difference when you practice them! good luck!
Heh, so you wanna learn how to do the splits? Well this is how I got taught. You usually have to strech before doing it because you might pull a muscle in your legs. Make sure you strech your thighs too. Just make sure you strech.
It will take a long time to achieve that! You should join a yoga class, they can train you properly and to where you don't hurt yourself especially tear a muscle.
i would suggest taking gymnastics or cheerleading .....
