Esperanza trunk split, Can it be mended?

I have several esperanza shrubs in my backyard. Most are around 6 to 8 feet tall. A trunk on one of the 8 footers has split down the middle from a very hard storm that hit the region lately. Is there a way to mend these 2 back together and save the shrub?Esperanza trunk split, Can it be mended?
Where are you located? From PlantAnswers.com:

';On most sites the stems freeze back to the roots every winter and then grow to 7 or 8 feet tall. In sheltered locations it can become a small tree.';

This leads me to believe that it will die back and regrow next year anyway. However, if that is not true in your location, you can try binding the split, with a splint if necessary for support. I'm not sure if this will work or not -- it depends on how much damage was done to the heartwood. Also, this type of split is now weak, prone to insect invasion, may become infected, etc. But you can always try -- it can't hurt!! Good luck with it, anyway!Esperanza trunk split, Can it be mended?
Nice try, but no.....it is not worth it. You have lost your shrub.
