If the temperature changes drastically and frequently, it could have caused it to shatter, much like water freezing causes sidewalks to crack.
It also could have fallen apart under its own weight if its really heavy and thin.
Did you have something in it that was heavy, e.g. coins, water, babies?
If so, the stress could have pushed the two sides apart.
If not, then was there something on top of it putting stress on it?
maybe a superhumanly strong insect got stuck inside and statred shaking about in it ......
